Book Of Landscapes
The Book of Landscapes is an online publication documenting PLACE: Performing Landscapes, a collaborative project by Hiatus (Brussels), Bethlen Theater (Hungary), and Norwegian Landscape Theater. The project focuses on developing and testing tools for artists engaging with urban green spaces, empowering them to create interactive artistic initiatives that connect people with nature in their city.
We believe that artists can shape profound and meaningful experiences that connect citizens with nature in an enduring way.
We selected 12 young European artists through an open call and spent ten days together this summer exploring artistic practices connected to nature. We exchanged ideas and knowledge, visited gardens, took part in workshops with artists and gardeners, and developed concepts for projects in Budapest, Brussels, and Racconigi.
The four Brussels-based artists developed together with Hiatus the project ‘Weaving Place’ about the natural area Donderberg in Laken. In Italy two artists, b. Bordoni and nat Skoczylas in collaboration with Norwegian Landscape Theatre, developed Rough Weather Network responding to Parco Castello Racconigi. Meanwhile, the three Hungarian artists, Anna Kudron, Dorina Bencsics, and Krisztina Losonci, worked with Bethlen Theatre to design a project centered on the square adjacent to the theatre.
Each pilot project was prepared in the fall of 2025 and implemented with a public participatory program in the spring of 2026.
The Book of Landscapes reflects on the activities and shares tools, methodologies, artistic experiences and inspiration for artists, scientists, educators, social workers, policymakers, activists and nature lovers.
Bethlen Theatre, with a 95-year legacy, has operated in its current form since 2012, supporting contemporary performing arts and local artists. Through programs, workshops, and collaborations, it engages the community and fosters cross-border artistic connections. Committed to regional performers, it aims to be a multidisciplinary hub for contemporary arts.
Norwegian Landscape Theatre is a creative production company of theatre maker, gardener and researcher Tormod Carlsen. The organisation works across Europe on a variety of projects with a belief in connecting humans to places. With roots in the field of performing arts they employ notions, tools and wisdom from this field to investigate how such practices might take form.
Hiatus is a Brussels based contemporary dance company under the artistic direction of choreographer Daniel Linehan. Hiatus organizes and creates dance productions, tours of repertory, workshops and other public engagements. Each project within Hiatus aims to create an opening that fosters connections. Hiatus is actively questioning, listening and responding, emphasizing the value of creative processes and public experiences.
